ŠUM I SJENA (BUZZ AND SHADOW) is an association founded in 2006 to promote audio and visual arts.

Our main goals are:

accomplishment of social, cultural and other youth interests
youth standard and social status protection
contribution to modern, free, pluralistic and tolerant, non-violent society
cooperation with other associations and youth organizations in Croatia and worldwide
promotion of urban and cultural scene

FESTIVAL LIQUID - 25 / 27.07. 2008. - ISLAND PROIZD - VELA LUKA - KORČULA

A non-profit organization for the promotion of audiovisual arts „Buzz and Shadow“ (Šum i sjena) will be hosting a multidisciplinary festival of new media cultures titled „Liquid“ at Proizd island near Korčula on 25 and 26 of July 2008. Our intention is to present new means of production and reproduction of sound, accompanied by alternative sub-cultural contents in the form of creative workshops.

The Festival is of humanitarian character –all the financial revenues will be donated to the parents’ association against drug abuse “Život Vita” from Vela Luka (Korčula).

The Croatian Ministry of Culture and the City of Vela Luka have both recognized the significance of this project and decided to support it. The Festival will therefore take place as a part of the Vela Luka Summer, a manifestation of culture and arts that the island of Korčula hosts every year.

Part of the Buzz and Shadow team organized a similar event at Proizd in 1996. At that time the event was a result of the team work of a group of enthusiasts, who were challenged by the idea of merging the isolated and virgin natural environment of the island with the corresponding sounds adapted to that environment. Despite many other challenges, including the nonexistence of the electricity grid at Proizd, the team managed to organize a successful musical event which attracted more than 700 admirers of audiovisual arts.

Proizd is again the place of our choice for several reasons. Besides clearly being a pearl of the Vela Luka coast, we opted for an island precisely because we want to create contents suitable and attractive to young people living on the islands, parts of Croatia that are still very much isolated from the rest of the country, particularly in terms of the lack of access to alternative artistic production.

Therefore the main goal of the Festival is to create a platform on which artists from different cultural environments would meet and collaborate. Participants will be given an opportunity to experience specific cultural features of the countries they come from. The purpose of the Festival is to connect young island dwellers to the coast and the rest of the world, by enabling communication and opening possibilities for further cooperation at the international level.

The long-term goal of the project is to maintain and expand cooperation with artists from different countries, which would create preconditions to organize similar events in different parts of Croatia and always with an active involvement of local populations.

Creative workshops will be an essential part of the Festival. The participants of the DJ workshops will be able to see and hear various techniques of mixing and scratching and learn the basics of those techniques, of the methods of music selection and performing in front of live audiences. They will be able to get insight into DJ equipment in theory and in practice.

Photography enthusiasts, for their part, will have a chance to exploit an endless range of motives of intact Mediterranean nature of Proizd.

Those who chose to participate in the graffiti workshop will be taught about the origins, styles and drawing techniques of this specific contemporary form of expressing personality, creativity and emotions.

Our visitors who prefer to dance can learn the basic moves of breakdance and find out about the roots of this unique street dance.

The puppetry workshop will deal with the forms and techniques of puppetry, types of puppets and puppet animation. It will include scene movements, puppet expressions, design and craftsmanship of puppets and the role of actors.

Participants of all workshops will have a chance to present their newly acquired skills in the musical part of the program, which will take place in the evening of both days of the Festival.

To the island of Korcula you can come with car ferries from Split, Drvenik and Orebic. Travel from Split to Vela Luka takes 3 hours, from Drvenik to Korcula 2 and a half hours, and from Orebic to Korcula takes fifteen minutes.
